Contention Ratios
You may have heard something about contention rates. What does this mean? This is based on the theory that not everybody uses the Internet at the same time. When a user has arrived at the page which has loaded, he will then spend time reading it. At this time no data from the Internet is required. On average, although you may have a ADSL account at 512KBs, the reality is that you are sharing your 512KBs with 50 other users. This is an average and NOT guaranteed and would explain why when you run a test of speed on a domestic Broadband connection you get poor results. This is usually because a user three doors up the road from you is downloading mp3 and videos 24 hours a day and effectively hogging the bandwidth for himself as opposed to sharing with you. You have probably seen 50:1 mentioned somewhere in the documentation, this is what it means. This is not good enough for business as they want a guaranteed contention of 50:1 or better. Some businesses have a requirement for the data throughput between 20 users instead of 50, hence a 20:1 contention rate. Others also demand 1:1 contention, in other words they are NOT prepared to share the bandwidth with anyone else. |
